Retirement Village
Cleveland
The Bristar Group have identified a need to establish a semi-dependent retirement facility in the Cleveland area. Considering the size and strategic location of this site, it represents an appropriate opportunity to create a retirement community that can achieve this outcome. The site is considered rare, being an undeveloped large medium-density residential site in the Cleveland area that is well located and close to public transport and other services.
The retirement facility proposed over proposed lot 2 involves the creation of 199 semi-dependent dwelling units, together with the associated car parking, communal facilities, open spaces, landscaping and on-site servicing of the development.
Design Philosophy
The philosophy for proposed retirement facility is based on the Dutch model ‘Apartments for Life (A4L)’.
Apartments for Life was founded to provide cost-efficient housing and care solutions to meet the physical and mental needs of the elderly. Its principal objective is to ensure the happiness and independence of its residents.
The village is designed for seniors and retirees who are single or have partners who live in high care accommodation off-site. This demographic does not have an array of options for types of development or aged care available. The design promotes social activity and integration as an important psychological component to the wellbeing of the residents. The design has shifted the private open spaces into a more public realm to promote interaction with other village residents. The design seeks to exceed the minimum requirements for communal open spaces as compensation for the reduction in private spaces and offers several different scales of communal open spaces for a variety of social gatherings.
